New Exhibition – Being a Tourist in the Land of Israel

The exhibition follows Jerusalem through the eyes of tourists in the late Ottoman and Mandate periods.

How did Jerusalem and its inhabitants look in the eyes of Jewish and non-Jewish tourists who came from the West? What did they think of the guides, lodging, and food? And which souvenirs did Jerusalem’s “machers” sell them?

We’ll launch a playful journey following pilgrims and travelers. We’ll trace the misidentifications of sites and the myths enrooted in history. We’ll read exaggerated and humorous descriptions, and identify places that have disappeared over time. The tour includes a visit to the exhibition Being a Tourist in the Land of Israel at the Old Yishuv Court Museum.
