Mizrach

“Mizrach” Plaques from the Museum Collection

A Mizrach plaque indicated the direction of prayer, towards Jerusalem.

The direction of prayer and the location of the Ark in synagogues were determined according to the location of the Jewish community.

The origin and timing of the tradition of preparing a special plaque for such a fundamental idea in Jewish tradition are unknown.

Being a Tourist in the Land of Israel

Exhibition Opening: 14.4.2025

The exhibition “Being a Tourist in the Land of Israel” explores Jerusalem through the eyes of tourists during the late Ottoman period and the British Mandate.

How did Jerusalem and its residents appear to Jewish and non-Jewish tourists, primarily from Western countries? What were their impressions of the tour guides, accommodations, and food? And what souvenirs did the local Jerusalem hustlers sell them?
